The Homestead of Peter Dajnko
Peter Dajnko (1787–1873), a linguist, grammarian, writer, and poet, attempted to introduce the Eastern Styrian dialect into Slovenian literature and developed a script named after it, called Dajnčica, which did not gain widespread acceptance. His most significant achievement is his book on beekeeping (“Čelarstvo,” 1831).
Dajnko’s birthplace is one of the few remaining and restored examples of typical Pannonian houses. It is a house covered with thatch, made of beams (cimber) and surrounded by clay. The house is estimated to be 350 to 400 years old, and the preserved living quarters feature a small annex with an exhibition of a preserved ethnological collection of old tools, a small room with an original corner (table and bench), a tiled stove, and a black kitchen. Several original documents of the owners and Peter Dajnko are also preserved.
