Beacon of Peace
Beside St. Peter’s Church in Gornja Radgona stands the Beacon of Peace, a memorial dedicated to the fallen victims and Maistro’s fighters from World War I. Designed by a team of architects from the Jože Plečnik School based on a concept by Simon Kregar from Ljubljana, the monument is made of polished Pohorje granite and stands 6.5 meters tall. At its center rises a 4-meter-tall column with an ornate capital made of white Dalmatian marble. Embedded in the concrete base of the monument is a time capsule written by Korl Mavrič, a retired school administrator and the oldest member of the special committee for the monument’s erection. The capsule contains records of the events involving executed rebellious soldiers in 1918 at the Radgona barracks and the activities of Maistro’s fighters in Gornja Radgona. Unveiled on June 2, 1940, the monument bore the inscription “Beacon – Memorial to the Fallen Victims and Maistro’s Fighters in Gornja Radgona.” It was destroyed by German invaders in April 1941. After World War II, locals reconstructed it, and it was restored in 2004. Every year on November 23, Rudolf Maister Day, a traditional memorial service is held at the monument by the Gornja Radgona Primary School, with the presence of municipal representatives and local war veterans’ associations.
