The city of Gornja Radgona in Slovenia is renowned both nationally and internationally for its wines. The history of viticulture here is difficult to describe due to the lack of written and material evidence. The Romans introduced vines to the region, and historical records indicate that viticulture was practiced here as early as the 12th century. By the 14th century, the citizens of Radgona had received a special privilege from the duke to transport wine throughout Styria and the rest of Austria without customs duties and tolls.

The predecessors of Gornja Radgona’s winemaking were the Kleinošek family, who were selling Styrian sparkling wine as early as 1852, and Bouvier, who spread the reputation of Radgona wines worldwide. Today, the Radgonske Gorice company produces acclaimed “sun-kissed” wines that mature in the cellars of the castle hill.

At the House of Sparkling Wine, guided tours of the cellars with tastings are available. Bottles of Golden Radgona sparkling wine age on special racks in the unique Cellar Under the Rock, which is definitely worth a visit. The Cellar Under the Roman Wheel, where a specially built Roman wheel combined with sunlight symbolizes the development of winemaking and sparkling wine production in Radgonske Gorice, holds some particularly valuable vintages of archival sparkling wines. Every visitor will undoubtedly be enchanted by the Cellar Under the Waterfall, where a waterfall gently flows from the castle hill rock, creating a magical atmosphere and making the tasting of wines and sparkling wines a special experience.
